Join engineer of research at the Center for Research, Innovation and Transfer in Circus Arts in Montréal (CRITAC), Marion Cossin PhD for this lecture exploring the current research informing the consensus on dynamic force loads in circus disciplines and on circus bodies. 

When we watch a circus performance, we’re captivated by the gravity-defying feats and the seamless flow of movements. But what remains unseen are the dynamic forces at play. Our study takes a deep dive into the world of circus arts, exploring these hidden forces that lie at the heart of every spectacular performance. In our research, we observed twelve different circus disciplines, ranging from aerial hoop and Russian bar. This isn’t merely academic knowledge; it’s invaluable information for everyone in the circus world, from performers to trainers, instructors and equipment designers and riggers. By understanding these dynamic forces, we can create safer performance environments and equipment, ensuring that the magic of the circus continues to thrive without compromising the well-being of its performers.

  • What are the maximal dynamic forces found in diverse circus disciplines?
  • What are some recommendations to develop a safe and functional circus arts practice space?
  • What are some considerations on the impact of these forces on the human body?

Marion is an engineer of research at the Center for Research, Innovation and Transfer in Circus Arts in Montréal (CRITAC). She has a PhD in biomedical engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. Her work focuses on various rare sectors such as the design of innovative and sustainable circus equipment, the biomechanical analysis of acrobatic performances and the integration of digital technologies in the arts.
