As a Medical Director and Consulting Orthopedist across New York City’s biggest shows, The Radio City Rockettes and the Performing Arts Collaborative at HSS, Dr. Melody Hrubes knows the unique demands Circus Artists face on the Broadway stage! In this talk she will cover the specifics of expectations for rehearsal time/tricks, how 8 show-a-week Equity style tracks/roles are adapting to support artists with unique skillsets (and vice-versa), what the industry can do to prioritize safety and longevity of performers, and what’s different about maintenance and medical care for this growing population of artists.

More about Melody Hrubes, MD, FACSM:
Dr. Melody Hrubes is a physiatrist and Medical Director of the Performing Arts Collaborative at HSS. She is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as Sports Medicine. She currently serves as lead medical for Team USA Breaking, Team Physician Coordinator for the United States Soccer Federation U17 Women’s National Team, Medical Director for the Radio City Rockettes, and works with multiple Broadway shows and companies.
She has experience with broad-based musculoskeletal injuries with particular interest in injury prevention and biomechanical rehabilitation in athletes, performing artists, endurance sports, and female athletes. Dr. Hrubes is skilled in trigger point and ultrasound-guided injections (joint, tendon, bursa, muscle), including PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and hyaluronic acid (gel lubricant for joints), which may be appropriate for certain patients.
Dr. Hrubes serves on the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) and as President of the Performing Arts Medicine Association. She is co-chair for the Dance/USA Task Force on Dancer Health Executive Committee and a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. She is also an active member of the International Association for Dance Medicine.
